Naturally Weathering Corten Steel
Also known as weathering steel, Corten is specially designed to develop a rich rust-coloured patina when exposed to the elements.
When first supplied, the steel may have a relatively plain or dark finish. Over the following weeks it will naturally begin to weather, developing beautiful shades of orange, copper, brown and deep rust.
Unlike ordinary mild steel, Corten is designed so that the weathered surface forms a protective patina. Once this layer has matured, the weathering process slows significantly rather than continually flaking away like untreated mild steel.
Want to Speed Up the Rusting Process?
If you would like your Corten wall art to develop its aged appearance more quickly, place it outside and lightly spray it with white vinegar.
During the initial curing and weathering stage, some rust residue can wash off and stain surrounding surfaces, so we recommend keeping the piece in an area where runoff will not cause an issue.
After approximately two weeks, give the artwork a thorough wash. Once the surface is clean and no loose rust transfers onto your hands, the initial curing stage is generally complete and the piece is ready to hang in its final position.
